Why Curricula in Tourism and Commercial Recreation?

Clare A. Gunn

Recreation and Parks Department Texas A&M University

With the increased proliferation of programs throughout the United States and the world, it is very timely to hold this forum on present trends and issues in curricula for tourism and commer cial recreation. And, it is especially appropriate because this appears to be the very first time at a national scale that the curricular interlacings between recreation, in its traditional public sense, and the fields of recreation and tourism in a commercial sense have been considered. This paper addresses just three questions: 1. What is a model curriculum? 2. Are current programs educating or training? 3. Have aims, goals and objectives been defined?

Key Words: Key Words: Tourism Curriculum • Tourism Education.
