Women's Career Progression in the Las Vegas Casino Industry: Facilitators and Constraints

Karin Weber

University of Nevada, Las Vegas

This study assessed female senior executives'perceptions of factors influencing women's career progression to top management positions in the Las Vegas casino industry. In the process, the representation of women in senior management positions and in various de partments was established. A mail survey was employed to gather data on female senior ex ecutives' demographic profile and their perceptions of career facilitators and constraints in the Las Vegas casino industry. Results indicated that hard work, communication and in terpersonal skills, job knowledge, and personality were perceived as the most important fa cilitators for women's progress to top management positions. The "old boys' network," a lack of assertiveness on the part of the women, and male bias and stereotyping represented the highest-ranking constraints on the career advance of women in the industry. The article concludes with the implications of the study and directions for future research.

Key Words: career development • female executives • casinos.
