The Staying Power of Hospitality Corporations in the Continuing Care Industry: Issues From the Front Lines

This article examines the role of continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) as a growth area of the 1990s. The evolution of the CCRC from a primarily not for-profrt, sectarian-based industry, into a consumer-oriented industry that includes for- profit corporations is discussed. The hospitality industry's consumer-oriented per spective promises major change in the products and services offered by CCRCs. Environmental and regulatory challenges will further shape the CCRC product. The paper concludes by examining the importance of this new and growing industry to hospitality corporations. CCRC managers must be not only capable health care providers, but also skilled in providing residential services and other amenities.
